RICHMOND-UPON-THAMES, United Kingdom--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Feb. 13, 2001
Norwood Systems, the provider of office networks for the wireless generation, has been accepted by the PAN (Personal Area Networking) Working Group to help develop the next version of the Bluetooth specification.
The working group's Charter is to define how Bluetooth devices will form IP networks. In July of 1999, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) released the Bluetooth 1.0 specification.
The announcement comes shortly after Norwood Systems' Bluetooth-based application EnterpriseMobility(TM) was named the Grand Prize Winner of the Innovative New Product Award at the recent COMNET 2001 exhibition in Washington, D.C.
The new PAN Profile will be the specification containing the information required to ensure that diverse devices supporting the Bluetooth wireless technology can communicate with each other worldwide. The new networking specification will enable Bluetooth mobile ad-hoc IP networks for data, voice, video, and other forms of communications.
Dr. Michael Foley, a wireless architect at Microsoft and the chairman of the PAN Working Group, commented, "We are delighted that Norwood Systems has joined the working group. They bring to the group an excellent knowledge of Bluetooth technology. Of particular importance to the group is their expertise in the area of mobile systems and the issues surrounding hand-off and roaming."
David Parsons, chief technology officer at Norwood Systems, welcomed the news. "It is a tremendous accolade being accepted for participation in developing the next specification of this exciting technology. Bluetooth will undoubtedly become the technology on which businesses base their voice and data communications. To be part of the development group is an excellent endorsement of our experience and knowledge in the area of wireless office networks, especially coming so soon after our success at the introduction of our EnterpriseMobility product at COMNET 2001."
The PAN Working Group is part of the Bluetooth SIG, formed in May 1998, of which Norwood Systems is an Associate Member. The SIG comprises a group of companies, led by telecommunications and computing industry leaders, working together to define and promote an open, royalty-free specification for seamless wireless connectivity and cable replacement for a wide variety of mobility-enhancing devices.
