Mohonasen has joined other Capital District school districts in the fight against drugs by declaring its school buildings and grounds "drug-free" zones.
A "drug-free" zone is any school building, athletic field, playground or area within 1,000 feet of school property.
The designation, established by the state Legislature, sets more severe fines and increased jail sentences for those convicted of dealing drugs around school property.
For example, a Class C felony drug charge, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, would be converted to a Class B felony with a maximum 25-year sentence.
Signs will be posted around the district's five schools warning would-be drug dealers that the school areas are being carefully watched by authorities.
