Qld: New speeding fines off to a flying start

By Rosemary Desmond

BRISBANE, April 17 AAP - Three people have already lost their licences as Queenslandpolice enforce tough new speeding laws to coincide with the coming holiday period.

All were caught overnight in the one area of Brisbane driving at excessive speeds soonafter the new laws came into force.

The three men, all driving on provisional licences, were booked on the Pacific Motorwayin the Mt Gravatt area on Brisbane's southside between 1am and 2am today, the region'straffic coordinator, Inspector John Murnane, said.

Each of the three drivers would receive $700 fines and eight demerit points and wouldlose their "P" plates, Inspector Murnane said.

"They were travelling at 156, 150 and 143kph (respectively) in a 100kph zone," he said.

Police were hoping people would travel within the speed limit to avoid being hit withthe new hefty fines and demerit points.

"It's disappointing within the first two hours of it coming in that we find three peoplein an hour travelling at those speeds," Insp Murnane said.

Motorists on full licences would lose them for six months if caught travelling morethan 40kph over the speed limit, he said.

Lesser penalties apply for lower speeds, including a $100 fine for exceeding the speedlimit by up to 12kph.

No collated results of speeding infringements were available for the entire state butpolice were confident the new laws, which came into force at midnight last night, willhelp cut Queensland's Easter road toll, Insp Murnane said.

Police will be out in force over the next week, he said.

"When you combine Easter weekend with Anzac weekend and school holidays, there willbe a lot of movement on the roads."

So far Queensland has been fatality-free at the start of the Easter road toll period.
