NSW: Smokers urged to quit for good in 2002
Smokers should put quitting at the top of their New Year's resolutions -- with the
help of their local doctor.
Research conducted by Newspoll last year shows one in three smokers intended to make
a New Year 2002 resolution to quit, and at any one time 60 per cent of smokers will be
considering kicking the habit.
Now, the New South Wales Cancer Council, National Heart Foundation and Action on Smoking
and Health have joined forces with GPs to urge smokers to visit their local doctor for
information and quit for good next year.
Research shows there's more chance of a smoker being able to quit for good with the
help of a GP, rather than trying to go it alone cold turkey.
Sydney community GP COLIN MENDELSOHN says doctors can provide support, increase motivation,
and reinforce the health benefits of giving up with some authority, so it is more likely
smokers will give up for good.
